The majority of Morgan Silver Dollars were minted between 1878 and 1904. In 1877, US Mint director Henry Linderman determined the country was in need of a fresh silver dollar design. A competition was held between Chief Engraver Charles Barber and a young recruit named George T. Morgan. Despite the Barber’s esteemed reputation, Linderman ultimately chose Morgan’s designs in February of 1878. In addition to the early dates, Morgans were also briefly minted in 1921 following the Pittman Act of 1918.
Each Morgan Silver Dollar in this online listing at JM Bullion will arrive to you in a protective plastic slab from either the Professional Coin Grading Service or the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Using a scale of 1-70, these coins were graded Mint State 63. The slabs will also contain a label bearing the official grading details. Please note that you could receive any date between 1878 and 1904. We are also unable to cherry-pick specific dates for customer orders.
The obverse of Morgan Dollar Coins features a portrait of Lady Liberty. In this classic design, we see Liberty in left-profile relief with a Phrygian cap and a crown of wheat atop her head. For the portrait, designer George T. Morgan used a school teacher from Philadelphia named Anna Williams as a model. Additional obverse details include rows of stars, the year of release, and the words E Pluribus Unum.
On the reverse side of Morgan Silver Dollars, there is a heraldic eagle design. Also created by Morgan, this rendition features the bald eagle with its wings spread and its head turned to the right. In the bird’s talons, you will see arrows and an olive branch as symbols of war and peace. You will also see decorative laurels and inscriptions reading United States of America, In God We Trust, One Dollar.
