Coin collectors around the globe rejoiced in the 1960s when large quantities of Morgan Silver Dollar coins were discovered in the vaults of the US Treasury. The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic circulation coins in American history. Produced from 1878 to 1904, with a special one-year minting in 1921, each coin contains approximately .7734 troy ounces of pure silver. Today, these coins are available from varied years and will be in AG (About Good) condition.
The Morgan Silver Dollar was introduced as a replacement for the Seated Liberty Dollar which was no longer produced following passage of the Coinage Act of 1873. This act put an end to the practice of free coining of silver. Under the practice, the US Treasury was forced to accept silver as presented to it, and return it following coinage. Passage of the Bland-Allison Act and Sherman Silver Purchase Act initiated and sustained, respectively, the production of Morgan Silver Dollars.
The coins were named after US Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, who designed the images featured on the coin. His left-profile image of Lady Liberty is featured on one side, with a bald eagle engraved on the other. The coins were produced from 1878 to 1904. Production ended in 1904 because the silver supplies purchased under the Sherman Silver Purchase Act were depleted. A special one-year minting took place again in 1921.
The obverse side of the coin features Morgan’s Lady Liberty image. Her head is surrounded by the engraving of “E Pluribus Unum” and the year of minting. The bald eagle on the reverse side is featured with its wings outstretched, clutching an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. The eagle is surrounded by the engraving of the phrases “United States of America” and “One Dollar.”
The US Mint was responsible for the production of all Morgan Silver Dollars. The original minting of the coins took place at the Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco, and New Orleans mints. The 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar minting took place at the Denver Mint, which was built in 1906. Today, collectors can purchase these Morgan Silver Dollars in AG (almost good) condition.
