Morgan Silver Dollar coins reintroduced silver dollars into circulation in the United States in 1878 after a five-year hiatus in production. Designed by George T. Morgan, a British national working for the United States Mint, it was the first coin in American history to feature an image of Lady Liberty that broke with the traditional Greek image.
The Morgan Silver Dollar was in regular production from 1878 to 1904, and struck again briefly in 1921. At this point in time, the US Mint was on the tail end of a redesign program for all American currency. The Peace Silver Dollar was designed by Anthony de Francisci as a testament to the lasting peace the world hoped for after World War I.
Francisci’s design featured a refreshed image of Lady Liberty he modeled based upon his wife Teresa. On the reverse was the image of the American bald eagle at rest, its wings at its side and standing atop its arrows and olive branch, rather than clutching them in preparation for war. Peace Silver Dollars were introduced in the latter half of 1921 to replace the Morgan.
The Peace Silver Dollar was not only minted for one of the shortest periods in US history (1921-1928, 1934-35), but it was also the final silver dollars struck by the US Mint.
