The Morgan Silver Dollar, designed by George T. Morgan, was first minted in 1878 following the passage of the Bland-Allison Act, which required the U.S. Treasury to purchase silver and convert it into coins. Production continued through 1904, then resumed briefly in 1921 before the design was replaced. The Peace Dollar succeeded the Morgan that same year, created to commemorate the end of World War I and the restoration of peace. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, the Peace Dollar was minted from 1921 through 1928, then again in 1934 and 1935, marking the end of regular-issue silver dollar production for circulation until 1971.
The obverse of the Morgan Dollar features a left-facing profile of Lady Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with cotton and wheat, with 13 stars representing the original colonies surrounding her portrait. The reverse displays a heraldic eagle with outstretched wings, grasping arrows and an olive branch in its talons, encircled by a wreath.
The Peace Dollar’s obverse presents a right-facing profile of Lady Liberty wearing a radiant crown, her hair flowing freely, representing a more modern, allegorical interpretation than previous designs. The reverse features a majestic bald eagle at rest, perched on a rocky crag with wings folded, clutching an olive branch, with the word “PEACE” inscribed below and rays of sunlight emanating from behind the mountain in the background.
