Baseball fandom runs deep in American and Canadian culture, with loyalties often passed down through generations within families. Fans typically align with their local team or adopt allegiances based on family heritage, creating intense regional rivalries like Yankees-Red Sox or Cubs-Cardinals. The culture encompasses traditions like ballpark visits, fantasy leagues, collecting memorabilia, and the ritual of following the lengthy 162-game season. While attendance and viewership have faced challenges from competing entertainment options in recent decades, baseball maintains passionate fan bases in major markets and smaller communities alike, with supporters valuing the sport’s leisurely pace and statistical depth.

MLB Silver Rounds

Issued by the Highland Mint and made in America, these silver rounds feature officially licensed logos for all 30 Major League Baseball franchises. For each of the 30 teams, you’ll find a 1 oz BU silver round and a 1 oz colorized silver round. Design concepts include the following details:

  • Obverse of each silver round features a franchise logo, with the team name and the founding year included around the edge of the field
  • Colorized reverse captures the franchise logo with the official colors of each franchise, delivering vibrant visuals in the process
  • Reverse side of each round in the series, regardless of team or finish, includes the Major League Baseball emblem

All you have to do is select the team of your choice, as well as the BU or colorized version, and then use our Personalized Engraving process to craft a message. MLB Engravable Rounds come with protective capsules and arrive in a gift box that includes a team-specific outer shipping sleeve.

History of Major League Baseball

Major League Baseball traces its origins to 1869 with the Cincinnati Red Stockings as the first professional team, though the modern structure emerged when the National League formed in 1876. The American League was established in 1901, and the two leagues began competing in the World Series in 1903. The sport evolved through distinct eras, including the Dead-ball Era, the Babe Ruth-led power surge of the 1920s, and Jackie Robinson’s breaking of the color barrier in 1947, which transformed both baseball and American society. Expansion brought teams across the continent, and the game has continually adapted through changes in rules and the integration of international players from foreign professional leagues.

Structure of Major League Baseball

MLB consists of two leagues—the American League and National League—each divided into three divisions: East, Central, and West. Each division contains five teams, making 30 teams total across the league. This structure was established in 1994 and created a playoff system where division winners and wild card teams compete for pennants and ultimately the World Series championship. The main historical difference between the leagues was the designated hitter rule (used in the AL but not the NL), though MLB standardized the DH rule across both leagues starting in 2022.
