Meet the 2022 Gold Koala and Joey Coin

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedIn

The koala is not only a popular and beloved native species in Australia but is also a fixture of Australian coinage. Since 2007, for example, Perth Mint has offered 1 oz silver coins in the Australian Silver Koala Series with new reverse designs each year. One of the more exciting koala-themed releases in recent years was the 2022 Proof Gold Koala and Joey Coin. This beautiful 1 oz gold coin issued on behalf of Niue has a limited mintage and extreme detail in the design elements.

Queen Elizabeth II Obverse

On the obverse sides of the new 2022 1 oz Proof Niue Gold Koala and Joey Coin, you will find one of the most beloved portraits of Queen Elizabeth II. This design was created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley for the Royal Mint. It remains an exceptionally popular effigy of Her Majesty on gold coins throughout the Commonwealth Nations. This portrait shows the Queen in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.

Koala and Joey Reverse

The reverse design of the 2022 Proof Gold Koala and Joey Coin comes with a beautiful depiction of one of Australia’s most beloved marsupials. In this design, you can see a mother koala climbing a eucalyptus tree as its young Joey clings to its back. The design element is very detailed, capturing the leaves of the tree and the individual hairs in the fur of the koalas.

Details of the Release

In a dual-release that includes a proof silver version, these 2022 1 oz Proof Niue Gold Koala and Joey Coins come with a protective capsule. The coin is housed in a black display box and will arrive with a themed shipper. Each coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity that bears an individual serial number. Further, there is a limited mintage of just 150 of these gold coins. These coins have 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure gold content, as well as proof visuals that include frosted designs and mirrored fields.

Brief Background on the Koala

Koalas are commonly mislabeled as koala bears. In fact, koalas are marsupials and are native to the Australian continent. Koalas are instantly recognizable with their grey-white fur, large, round ears, and the black skin of their oval-shaped noses. Koalas are largely sedentary animals that can sleep for as many as 20 hours per day. This is believed to be a result of the lack of nutritional value in the daily diet of the koala.
