Missouri, known as the “Show Me State,” is a Midwestern state located at the intersection of the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio rivers and bordered by six other states. Acquired from France as part of the Louisiana Purchase, Missouri became the 24th state in 1821.
The three largest cities in the state are St. Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield. Missouri, once the starting point of both the Oregon Trail and the Pony Express, was the scene of more than a thousand battles during the Civil War.
Under Missouri state law, bullion and investment coins are exempt from sales tax. According to the law, ‘bullion’ refers to gold, silver, platinum, or palladium, at least 0.900 pure, with a value dependent on its metal content rather than the form. “Investment coins” refers to “Numismatic coins or other forms of money and legal tender manufactured of gold, silver, platinum, palladium or metals with a fair market value greater than the face value of the coins.”
Note that paper currency, as well as tokens and other non-legal tender numismatic collectibles, are not tax exempt. For these items, a state sales tax rate of 4.225% applies. There are often additional city or county sales taxes; the total tax rate can be as high as 9.6% in Missouri.
