Minnesota, the “Land of 10,000 Lakes” is known for its many outdoor activities, including hiking, water skiing, and ice fishing. More than half of its residents live in Minneapolis-St. Paul (The ‘Twin Cities’), while the rest of the state has many national parks and rugged natural areas. Minnesota consistently ranks among the healthiest states, with high voter turnout and high literacy rates.
Minnesota collects sales tax on purchases of coins, paper currency, and precious metals, as such items are considered to be tangible personal property, and therefore subject to the tax. Such items are subject to a use tax if purchased elsewhere and brought into Minnesota.
In recent years, there have been several attempts to create an exemption for coin and bullion sales. However, no efforts have passed to date, and buyers of currency, coins, and precious metal bullion in the state of Minnesota must pay the state sales tax, which is currently 6.875%. There may also be additional local or county taxes due; for example, in Minneapolis the current sales tax rate is 7.15%.
