Much of the southern state of Louisiana was formed from sediment washed down the Mississippi River. As a result, much of it is marsh and swamp land, home to diverse range of plant and animal species. Many of Louisiana’s urban areas, especially New Orleans, have a multicultural and multilingual heritage influenced by French, Spanish, African, and Native American cultures.
Bullion Sales Tax in Louisiana
According to Louisiana state law (http://www.revenue.louisiana.gov/forms/publications/1001%2810_03%29.pdf), “Gold, silver, or numismatic coins, or platinum, gold, or silver bullion” are exempt from sales tax. Previously, this exemption only applied to sales “having a total value of one thousand dollars or more.” However, the Louisiana State Legislature recently passed a bill to broaden the exemption.
Effective August 1, 2013, sales of gold, silver, or numismatic coins – as well as gold, silver, or platinum bullion – are no longer taxable, regardless of the purchase price. Note that paper money, as well as non-coin numismatic collectibles such as tokens and medallions, remain taxable. The state sales tax rate in Louisiana is 4%; additional local and parish taxes can bring this as high as 11% in some areas.
JM Bullion, being an out of state retailer, does NOT have to charge sales tax to Louisiana residents. Browse our selection of tax free gold and silver products. Please note that we are not tax experts, and individuals may be liable to pay local Use tax.
