Buying Gold and Silver in Colorado

sell to jm bullion

Investment in silver and gold has a long history in Colorado. Much of Colorado was settled by those who had initially planned to travel all the way west during the California Gold Rush. Gold was first discovered here in 1858.

In the 1870s, rich silver veins were discovered here; silver mining would remain a major industry in Colorado through the 1890s. Today, Colorado’s lack of sales taxes makes it an attractive destination for those looking to buy gold or silver coins and bullion.

Bullion Sales Tax in Colorado

Gold and silver investors in Colorado often find buying from local coin dealers to offer the best prices, since there are no state sales taxes for purchases of coins or bullion. Retail sales of precious metal bullion and of coins are exempt from sales tax. According to Colorado FYI Sales #60 – Sales Tax Exemptions for Coins and Precious Metal Bullion, “Retail sales of coins and precious metal bullion are exempt from sales tax.” This exemption applies to state sales taxes, as well as any otherwise applicable county and local taxes.

Under Colorado law, coins containing precious metals that have been used as currency in the US or any other country are exempt from tax, as are precious metal bullion (any precious metal which has been refined so that its value depends on its precious metal content rather than its form). Note that numismatic collectibles such as tokens and medallions which have value beyond the value of the metal they contain do not fall under this exemption, and other precious metal items such as jewelry are also taxable. If you plan to purchase such items, pay attention to the sales tax rate, as it varies dramatically from city to city within Colorado.
