Native Americans lived in the area that would become Daly City from at least the sixth century. However, Daly City wasn’t inhabited until wealthy Mexicans established ranches there after California gained independence. After the US government declared more land was available to private citizens, Irish immigrants established their own farms where Westlake, Serramonte, Colma, and Pacifica stand now.

Daly City experienced rapid growth in the late 19th century, in line with the expansion of San Francisco. More residents arrived in 1906, after their San Francisco homes were destroyed in an earthquake. However, it still remained relatively small until developer Henry Doelger built the community of Westlake, a major residential, business, and retail district. This historic neighborhood is one of America’s earliest examples of a large-tract suburb.
