Known simply as the “sovereign,” the modern Great Britain Gold Sovereign coins are gold bullion products from the Royal Mint of England that have been in production since 1817. The coins are based on original circulating gold currency and feature effigies of the kingdom’s reigning monarch on the obverse with each release. Right now, Great Britain Gold 1/4 Sovereign coins are available to purchase from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Each Great Britain Gold 1/4 Sovereign Coin available here is housed inside of a protective plastic flip. The Quarter Sovereign was introduced by the Royal Mint in January of 2009 and became the smallest legal tender coin in modern British history. The Quarter Sovereign joins the Sovereign and Half Sovereign gold coins, and like the Half Sovereign, has never been issued as an actual circulating gold coin.
Great Britain Gold Sovereign coinage was introduced in 1817 near the end of the reign of King George III. The coins were based on the concept of the English gold sovereign, a coin that was last issued in circulation in England in 1603 when King James I of England was on the throne. The modern Gold Sovereign coins launched during King George III’s reign in 1817 featured the same reverse image still found on the coins today, with a portrait of George III on the obverse. The gold sovereign, as a circulating gold coin, had a nominal face value of 1 Pound sterling.
On the obverse of these Great Britain Gold 1/4 Sovereign Coins is the image of Queen Elizabeth II. The modern Gold Quarter Sovereign Coins have only featured two of the effigies of Her Majesty. Coins issued from 2009 to 2015 have Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth-generation portrait of the Queen in right-profile relief, while all coins issued from 2016 onward have Jody Clark’s fifth-generation portrait. The latter design depicts the Queen at the age of 89 wearing the Royal Diadem crown. Coins issued since 2023 feature King Charles III in left-profile relief.
The reverse face of Great Britain Quarter Sovereign Gold Coins includes the depiction of St. George slaying the dragon. Though this is a modernized image, it is still based on the 1817 design created by Benedetto Pistrucci with the approval of King George III. It depicts St. George on horseback with a sword drawn as he tramples over a dragon.
The Royal Mint of England issues these Great Britain Gold 1/4 Sovereign coins with 22-karat gold content, or .9170 fine gold. The Quarter Sovereign is available purely as a commemorative bullion coin and is not a circulating coin.
