    1913 Fairmont Collection Coins

Among the younger dates you’ll find in the Fairmont Collection comes from 1913. While this is still more than a century ago, these coins are relatively young compared to the 19th-century Fairmont Collection dates. The 1913 date is notable for both its design, rarity, and place in global history.

    1913-S Liberty Eagles

The most notable thing you’ll see in 1913 Liberty Eagles from the Fairmont Collection is that date mark from the eve of World War I. The outbreak of war in Europe in the 1910s would be the driving impetus behind many of these Fairmont Collection coins being lost to history for the next century. Many Pre-33 US Gold Coins already overseas at this time stayed there for the next century, and hundreds, if not thousands, more would be shipped overseas as debt payments after the war and remain there for decades to come.

When you look at the 1913 Liberty Eagle Gold Coin, you will find a design that originated in 1907 during the US Mint’s revival program for the coins of the US Eagle Series. More importantly, this design was created as part of a larger movement that saw coin and banknote designs change to better acknowledge indigenous cultures in America.

This design of Liberty as an indigenous princess with a feathered headdress was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens and done so at the request of President Theodore Roosevelt. The 1913 Liberty Eagle was struck at both Philadelphia and San Francisco. While the Philadelphia Mint struck 442,000 of these coins, this 1913-S is one of just 66,000 struck by the San Francisco Mint.
