As you browse our available Fairmont Collection specimens, you’ll find that some of these transport you back to an era in American history when national tensions were on the rise and American gold coins were widely circulating. The 1854 date mark harkens back to an era when the United States was fresh off the boom of the California Gold Rush.
In 1854, the United States Mint issued $10 Liberty Gold Eagles at the Philadelphia Mint, New Orleans Mint, and San Francisco Mint. The newly-opened San Francisco Mint struck coins for the first time in its history and outpaced Philadelphia and New Orleans combined. While Philadelphia issued 54,250 coins and New Orleans issued 52,500 coins, the San Francisco Mint struck 123,826 coins.
