History of Utah

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes including the Ute, Paiute, and Shoshone, Utah was explored by Spanish missionaries in the 1770s and later by American fur trappers. The defining moment came in 1847 when Brigham Young led Mormon pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley, establishing a religious refuge that became the foundation of Utah Territory in 1850. The region’s path to statehood was delayed by conflicts over polygamy and federal authority, but Utah finally joined the Union in 1896 as the 45th state.
