As the Goldback movement grew from states in the American West, South Dakota became the fifth overall state with a series of these thoughtfully-designed 24-karat gold notes, and the first in the American Midwest. The South Dakota Goldbacks offer beautiful visuals celebrating the state’s rich indigenous heritage and its wild spirit of adventure.
The designs featured on the various denominations of South Dakota Goldbacks were among the first in the broader collection to focus more heavily on the indigenous heritage of a state. Included among the designs were those that also celebrated the state’s beautiful wild spaces and its agricultural history. The South Dakota Goldbacks are available in 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 denominations, with a 5-pack set and a 100-pack of 1 Goldbacks also available.
The region was home to various Native American tribes, particularly the Lakota Sioux, before European exploration began in the 1700s. The area became part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, and settlement accelerated after the discovery of gold in the Black Hills in 1874, leading to conflicts with Native tribes including the Battle of Little Bighorn. The Great Dakota Boom of the 1880s brought massive agricultural settlement, and South Dakota was admitted as the 40th state in 1889, the same day as North Dakota.
