The debut of Florida Goldbacks marked an important moment for the broader collection. Florida not only became the first southern state to feature a Goldback design series, but it was also the first to see new denominations and more customized designs introduced within the larger pantheon of Goldback notes. Each denomination has a very detailed, specific design celebrating the state’s long history, from indigenous culture to the arrival of Europeans and American statehood.
As mentioned above, Florida Goldbacks were the first design series in the collection to introduce specialized designs that moved slightly away from the classical interpretations of female allegories to designs honoring very specific groups, moments, and eras in Florida’s history. More importantly, the debut of Florida Goldbacks brought about the introduction of several new denominations, including:
Alongside the established 1, 5, 10, 25, and 50 denominations and the above-mentioned denomintions, Goldback also introduced other exciting new options with the Florida Goldback Series. This included a Limited Early Release 1 Florida Goldback with a different design than the standard 1 Goldback, as well as an expanded 8-piece set, 100-packs for the 1 and 1/2 Goldbacks, and a 5,000 Florida Goldback Box with each denomination represented in varying volumes to add up to a total denomination of 5,000 Florida Goldbacks.
Florida has one of the most complex colonial histories in America, controlled successively by Spain, Britain, and Spain again before becoming a U.S. territory in 1821. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León arrived in 1513, and St. Augustine, founded in 1565, is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the continental U.S. After territorial status, conflicts with Seminole Indians led to multiple wars, and Florida became the 27th state in 1845. The state’s development accelerated dramatically in the 20th century with tourism, agriculture, and the space program.
