Canadian Gold Coins Available to Purchase from JM Bullion

The Royal Canadian Mint is one of the most respected refiners of gold bullion in the world. Originally established in 1908 to refine gold discovered in the Yukon Territories, one of the first major projects of the Royal Canadian Mint was to refine gold bars for the United Kingdom to use in paying off war debts from World War I. Today, the Royal Canadian Mint continues its production of gold bullion bars for investors, but also has a broad portfolio of gold bullion coins available as well. Many of these coins are available annually from JM Bullion.

    Canadian Gold Maple Leaf

Just the second gold bullion coin of its kind made available to investors, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf was released in 1979 following the 1967 introduction of the South African Gold Krugerrand. The idea behind modern gold bullion coins was to provide a vehicle for the private ownership of gold bullion. The Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin may have been second in the market with its 1979 introduction, but in 1982 it became the first-ever 24-karat .9999 pure gold coin when the purity level was increased in November of that year.

Each year, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is released by the Royal Canadian Mint with the same basic images on the reverse and obverse sides. The reverse of the coin has always featured the sugar maple leaf design created back in 1982 by Walter Ott. Inscriptions on this face of the coin identify the nation of issue, purity level, weight, and metal content of the coin. The obverse face of the coin always features Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. However, as the Queen’s portrait is regularly updated by the mint, three different images have actually on this side of the coins:

    • 1979-1989: Arnold Machin’s depiction of a 39-year-old Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief with a tiara on her head features on the coins. This would be the last Royal Mint of England original design on Canadian denominations.
    • 1990-2002/2003: Dora de Pedery-Hunt develops the first Canadian portrait of the Queen for the mint to use. It depicts the Queen in right-profile relief at the age of 64 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown.
    • 2003/2004-present: Susanna Blunt creates the second-ever Canadian portrait of the queen, depicted Her Majesty at the age of 79 with no crown on her head. This is a first since 1952 and the end of the reign of King George VI.

Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins underwent a number of other minor changes over the course of time, many of these simple additions of new weights to the series. From 1979 to 1982, the series featured only a 1 oz gold coin with .999 pure gold content. In November 1982, the purity not only increased to .9999 pure gold, but the mint added 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz coins. In 1986, a 1/2 oz gold coin was added. In 1993, a 1/20 oz gold coin was added. A 1/15 oz gold coin was produced only in 1994 to mark the 15th anniversary of the series. Most recently, a 1 Gram coin was added in 2014.

    Canadian Gold MapleGram

A unique offshoot of the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series is the Canadian Gold MapleGram. The Gold MapleGram shares the same designs as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf, but packages 25 individual 1 Gram Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coins into individual assay cards with a capsule at the center of the card and conjoins all 25 coins together in a larger card. You can store the MapleGram together as a singular 25 Gram product or breakout each of the individual 1 Gram cards as you see fit.

    Call of the Wild Series

The Royal Canadian Mint is the largest mint in the world to dabble in the production of .99999 pure gold coins. This has been done on a number of occasions in the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Series, but largely in very limited runs for a special occasion. The Call of the Wild Series saw the Royal Canadian Mint introduce the concept of .99999 pure gold content to a regular-issue series of coins.

The Call of the Wild Series launched in 2014 with a planned release schedule that includes one new animal design per date mark. The series, like so many others from the Royal Canadian Mint, focuses on native wildlife found throughout Canada, as well as North America as a whole. Each one of the coins in this series features the Susanna Blunt effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse and one common design element on the reverse: radiating sound waves. These lines, or waves, are meant to reflect the “call” of each animal depicted in the series. Designs available to date include:

    • Howling Wolf
    • Growling Cougar
    • Roaring Grizzly
    • Bugling Elk
    • Screaming Golden Eagle
    • Hissing Bobcat

So far in this series, all of the reverse designs of the various animals have been created by famed wildlife artist Pierre LeDuc. He had previously worked with the Royal Canadian Mint on the popular Canadian Wildlife Series of silver bullion coins produced between 2011 and 2013.

    Animal Portrait Series

The Animal Portrait Series is another recent collection from the Royal Canadian Mint, with this particular series offering 1/4 Troy oz .9999 pure gold coins with reverse proof visuals. A reverse proof coin has frosted background fields with mirrored design elements, as opposed to the traditional frosted design elements overlaying mirrored fields. The Animal Portrait Series actually had a companion series of 3/4 Troy oz reverse proof silver coins as well, with each version sharing the same reverse designs.

Denis Mayer Jr. created all of the reverse animal designs in this collection. Designs offered in this series to date include the following animals:

    • 2017 Bighorn Sheep
    • 2018 Wolverine
    • 2019 Mustang (horse)
    • 2020 Woodland Caribou

Brief History of the Royal Canadian Mint

The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 to facilitate the easier production of Canadian currency for the nation. From 1858 to 1908, Canadian coinage was produced by the Royal Mint in London and shipped over. The Ottawa Mint branch location of the Royal Canadian Mint was the first to be built. It was proposed in 1890 and finally authorized for production in 1901. It would open its doors in 1908 and serve the nation as its sole mint until 1976.

By the 1960s, the Ottawa Mint was overwhelmed in terms of production capacity. A large volume of Canadian 10-cent coins were actually being produced in the United States at this point at its Philadelphia Mint location. A new facility was proposed in 1970 and finally opened in Winnipeg in 1976. Today, the Ottawa Mint handles the production of all the Royal Canadian Mint’s bullion and numismatic products, while circulation banknotes and coins are produced at the Winnipeg Mint.
