The personification of Britannia gained prominence during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Artists and propagandists began portraying Britannia as a powerful and regal figure, often depicted with the attributes of the Roman goddesses Minerva and Roma. This depiction symbolized Britain’s imperial ambitions and strength.
Since the debut of this coin in 1987, Philip Nathan’s portrait of Britannia has graced the reverse. This image shows the full-length figure of Britannia with a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left as it rests on a Union Jack shield. She wears a Corinthian helmet on her head.
