1 oz British Gold Britannias at JM Bullion

The British Gold Britannia is one of the most well-known and popular coin collections in the world. Introduced in 1987, it is one of the precious metals industry’s oldest coin programs behind only the Gold Krugerrand, Gold Maple Leaf, Gold Panda, and Gold Eagle. The 1 oz British Gold Britannia is the backbone of this series and is available for purchase in numerous varieties each year.

    History of Britannia

The personification of Britannia gained prominence during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. Artists and propagandists began portraying Britannia as a powerful and regal figure, often depicted with the attributes of the Roman goddesses Minerva and Roma. This depiction symbolized Britain’s imperial ambitions and strength.

Design of 1 oz Gold Britannias

Since the debut of this coin in 1987, Philip Nathan’s portrait of Britannia has graced the reverse. This image shows the full-length figure of Britannia with a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left as it rests on a Union Jack shield. She wears a Corinthian helmet on her head. On the obverse, the following monarch portraits have featured on the coins:

    • Queen Elizabeth II (3rd generation): From 1987 to 1997, Raphael Maklouf’s portrait of Elizabeth II in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem features on the coins.
    • Queen Elizabeth II (4th generation): From 1998 to 2015, Ian Rank-Broadley’s bust of Elizabeth II in right-profile relief is shown with the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara on her head.
    • Queen Elizabeth II (5th generation): From 2016-2023, Jody Clark’s fifth-and-final effigy of Elizabeth II graced the coins and included the George IV State Diadem.
    • King Charles III (1st generation): In 2022, Marting Jennings designed a new left-profile bust of His Majesty King Charles III for Britannias. This portrait debuted in 2023 and marked the first monarch other than Elizabeth II to grace the coins.
