One of the three fractional-ounce Gold Britannia coins offered each year is the 1/4 oz gold coin. When the Gold Britannia debuted in 1987, The Royal Mint issued 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold coins, all of which are common weights offered in other major gold bullion collections. The 1/4 oz Gold Britannia is an affordable way to invest in gold bullion.
Britannia was first featured on coins issued in Britain during the rule of the Roman Empire, occurring in the 1st century AD. Throughout British history, the symbolism has been modified countless times. During World War II, Britannia experienced a resurgence in popularity as a symbol of national unity and defiance against Nazi Germany. She was often depicted in wartime propaganda posters, embodying the spirit of resilience and determination.
Introduced in 1987, the Gold Britannia coins once featured only the effigies of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. With her passing in September 2022, His Majesty King Charles III became the first monarch other than Elizabeth II to grace the coins. Effigies featured on the obverse in this series include:
Since 1987, only one image has featured on the reverse of the coins: Philip Nathan’s portrait of Britannia. Designed in 1987, it depicts Britannia’s full-length figure in front-facing relief as she glances to her right. Her right hand holds a trident and her left hand clutches an olive branch while resting on a Union Jack shield. The portrait includes a Corinthian helmet on her head.
