To say that the Perth Mint excels in the design of all of its bullion coins would be an understatement. From the annual releases such as the Kookaburra, Koala, and Kangaroo, to its one-time proof coins, the Perth Mint puts considerable effort into designing coins that investors and collectors will swoon over. The release of a new Perth Mint Proof Silver Coin honoring the natural wonders of Australia is evidence of that effort.
The 2021 Proof Australian Great Southern Land Mother of Pearl Issue
The all-new 2021 Proof Australian Great Southern Land Mother of Pearl Silver Coin is a 1 oz proof silver coin with beautiful visuals, special reverse layering, limited mintage figures, and exceptional packaging. The Perth Mint issued these coins with 1 Troy oz of .9999 pure silver and limited the mintage of the design to just 5,000 coins in total. Each coin is individually packaged in the Perth Mint’s clear acrylic display case, black housing with a clear lid that lets you see the design of the coin while it is on display.
Each coin has traditional proof visuals that include frosted designs and mirror-like fields. The reverse of the Proof Australian Great Southern Land Mother of Pearl release comes with a Mother of Pearl layer on the depiction of the Australian continent. The coin and its display case ship in an illustrated shipper and come with a Certificate of Authenticity from Perth.
Queen Elizabeth II obverse
On the obverse of 2021 1 oz Proof Australian Great Southern Land Mother of Pearl Silver Coins, you will find the sixth-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in use on Perth coins as of 2018. This effigy from Jody Clark depicts the Queen at the age of 89 with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head. The field includes an ornate background element with inscriptions of the monarch’s name, nation of issue, and face value surrounding the design element.
Great Southern Land reverse
The reverse side of 2021 Proof Australian Great Southern Land Mother of Pearl Silver Coins comes with a depiction of Australia and Tasmania in the central field. To create impressive visual contrast, the designs of the mainland Australian continent and the island of Tasmania have been layered with a Mother of Pearl finish and set against a black backdrop. Around the central image, the wildlife that inhabits the expansive oceans around Australia’s coast fill the design rim. These include a sea turtle, Great White Shark, seahorse, and other figures. The date, weight, purity, and metal content are inscribed along the upper-left edge of the design field.
Fun Facts on the Design
The images of the Australian mainland and the island of Tasmania have a layering of Mother of Pearl for visual contrast against the rest of the design element. Mother of Pearl, known officially as Nacre, is an organic material found within the inner shells of various mollusks. This material is produced naturally within some of these inner shell layers and is known to not only be strong and resilient but also as you can see here, it is iridescent. As such, you will find that as you change your angle of viewing for the reverse, the colors on the Australian continent will appear to shift and change.
