From 1988 to 2023, the series featured varying effigies of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse side, with coins from 1990 to 2023 featuring portraits created by Canadian artists. With the Queen’s passing in September 2022, the series featured a different monarch for the first time in history. Steven Rosati, also a Canadian artist, created the first effigy of His Majesty King Charles III for the Silver Maple Leaf in 2024. The reverse of Canadian Silver Maples has long featured Walter Ott’s 1979 depiction of a sugar maple leaf, a design he created for the Gold Maples when that program debuted.
