2019 marked the 50th anniversary of one of NASA’s greatest achievements in its history. During the summer of 1969, NASA successfully sent three American astronauts into space and landed two of them on the surface of the Moon. This event marked not only the first visit by humans to another celestial body, but it also marked the successful transit from Earth to another celestial body and back. Now, Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Rounds with a 24-karat gold-clad layer are available to you for purchase online from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
● Round arrives inside of an acrylic capsule with a small display and a Certificate of Authenticity!
● Based on an actual space-flown medallion design!
● Clad in 24-karat gold!
● Obverse features a depiction of the Apollo 11 mission patch.
● Reverse includes the names of the crew and the important dates of the mission.
Apollo 11 was the culmination of nearly a decade of work at NASA to meet a goal set for the administration and the nation by President John F. Kennedy. The 1950s and 1960s marked the first two decades of the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union, and also the Space Race between the two global superpowers.
The Soviet Union landed the first major blow by successfully launching its Sputnik satellite into orbit. In response, President Kennedy challenged the nation and NASA to go one better than the Soviets. He challenged the nation to send a man to the Moon by the end of the 1960s, and return that individual safely to Earth. With just months to go, this was achieved in July 1969.
Obverse designs on the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Round recreate the visuals of the Apollo 11 mission patch. In this design, an American bald eagle lands on the surface of the Moon with an olive branch in its talons. The design is representative of the motto that American astronauts “came in peace,” and also reflected the name of the lunar lander, the Eagle.
Reverse elements on Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Rounds include the names of the three men in the Apollo 11 crew. These names are emblazoned along the top of the design field with three important dates marked in the central design. These include the dates of liftoff, arrival on the Moon, and splashdown back on planet Earth.
These Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Rounds are finished with a clad layer of 24-karat gold. Each one comes with an acrylic capsule and a small display stand. The rounds also come with a Certificate of Authenticity. This design is based on one created for the astronauts of Apollo 11 in 1969 by the Robbins Company.
