The Barber Coinage was available from the United States Mint from 1892 to 1916. The collection is so-named because it offers designs on the obverse of the dime, quarter, and half dollar that are the same and were created by Charles E. Charles E. Barber was tasked by the Treasury Department and US Mint with developing new designs for the three main US coin denominations in the 1890s following a failed attempt to find new designs from outside artists. Following the release of the Morgan Silver Dollar and other new designs on other denominations in previous decades, American distaste for national coin designs was growing.
When the submitted designs for a contest in the late 1880s resulted in more disappointment, Barber was given the job of developing new images for the dime, quarter, and half dollar. He would go on to create a Liberty bust for the obverse that was shared across all three denominations, while the reverse featured a shared design for the half dollar and quarter, while the dime got its own design.
The obverse of 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars in this product listing features the masculine bust of Lady Liberty. This right-profile portrait shows Liberty wearing a crown wreath with her hair up in a bun. The design offers inscriptions on this side of the date, 13 stars, and the national motto.
On the reverse side of the 90% Silver Barber Half Dollars is an image of the heraldic eagle. Based on the Great Seal of the United States, it includes the national heraldic shield on the eagle’s chest, arrows in one talon, and an olive branch in the other. 13 stars are arranged in a cluster above its head and the mint mark features on this side.
Barber Half Dollars were produced by the Denver Mint, New Orleans Mint, and San Francisco Mint with mint marks on the reverse directly beneath the eagle.
