The Arizona Goldback Series introduces Goldbacks to the American Southwest for the first time. The designs within this series are inspired by Arizona’s long and layered history, depicting elements from the Spanish colonial period and the era of Mexican independence through to its statehood in the United States. Today, 50 Arizona Goldback Gold Notes are available at JM Bullion.
Note Highlights:
Founded in 1894 by Boston Brahmin astronomer Percival Lowell on a pine-forested mesa overlooking Flagstaff, Lowell Observatory was established specifically to study Mars and search for evidence of the canals Lowell controversially believed indicated intelligent life on the red planet. Despite Lowell’s Martian theories being later debunked, his observatory attracted serious scientific talent and benefited from Flagstaff’s high altitude, clear skies, and dark nights, becoming a center for planetary astronomy and cosmological research.
All 50 Arizona Goldback Gold Notes are available in protective currency sleeves. Until the 2025 introduction of a 100 Goldback in the Florida Goldback Series, the 50 Goldback was previously the largest denomination in the greater Goldback collection.
In the design of 50 Arizona Goldback Gold Notes, you’ll find the female allegory of Curiosity working at the Lowell Observatory. On February 18, 1930, a 23-year-old Kansas farm boy turned astronomer named Clyde Tombaugh, hired to continue Percival Lowell’s quest for a predicted ninth planet, detected a faint moving object while systematically comparing photographic plates taken with Lowell Observatory’s 13-inch telescope. After weeks of careful verification, Lowell Observatory announced the discovery on March 13, 1930—what would have been Percival Lowell’s 75th birthday—of the planet Pluto, named by an 11-year-old English girl after the Roman god of the underworld.
