5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins were first issued in 1880 when Colombia adopted the gold standard. From the introduction of this denomination, the coins were produced to be identical to the British Gold Sovereign in gold content and weight. Each coin has .2355 Troy oz of 22-karat gold, or 91.67% gold content per coin. From 1907 to 1931, the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin was pegged to the British Sovereign at a rate of 1 Pound sterling to 5 Pesos. After Britain abandoned the gold standard that year, the 5 Peso coin was pegged to the American dollar as it was still backed by gold through 1933.
On the obverse side of 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins, you will find one of two designs. One of these designs is the image of a man kneeling down and chiseling away at a piece of rock. The other, issued largely between 1918 and 1928, is a bust of Simon Bolivar, the man known as the George Washington of South America and the founding father of Colombia. This bust first appeared in 1918 on the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin to mark the 100th anniversary of Bolivar’s victory in the war of independence. Both designs feature an inscription of “Republica Colombia” across the top with the date mark at the bottom.
The reverse face of 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins features the same design throughout the history of the coin’s availability. Here, the Colombian coat of arms is shown with the denomination issued on the top of the design field.
