Nations around the world adopted the gold standard at varying points in human history. Once many of these nations did, gold coins were issued in circulation with varying denominations. One of the most popular from the South American continent was the Colombian Gold Peso. The most popular denomination in this series was the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin. Right now, 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins are available to purchase online from JM Bullion.

    Coin Highlights:

    • Arrives with a protective plastic flip!
    • First released in 1880!
    • Contains .2355 Troy oz of actual gold content.
    • Bears a face value of 5 Pesos backed by Colombia.
    • On the obverse is a bust of Simon Bolivar or a man quarrying rock.
    • The reverse features the Colombian coat of arms.
    • Please keep in mind you could get coins with matching dates, designs, and conditions if you purchase multiples.

Each of the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins available to you through this product listing comes with a protective plastic flip. This is a random year, varied condition listing from JM Bullion. We select your coins for you at our discretion once your payment has been processed. We are not able to guarantee a specific date mark, design, or condition. The coins could range in condition from Brilliant Uncirculated to those with moderate to heavy wear and tear. As common circulation coins, you are most likely to receive coins that have some degree of wear and tear present.

5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins were first issued in 1880 when Colombia adopted the gold standard. From the introduction of this denomination, the coins were produced to be identical to the British Gold Sovereign in gold content and weight. Each coin has .2355 Troy oz of 22-karat gold, or 91.67% gold content per coin. From 1907 to 1931, the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin was pegged to the British Sovereign at a rate of 1 Pound sterling to 5 Pesos. After Britain abandoned the gold standard that year, the 5 Peso coin was pegged to the American dollar as it was still backed by gold through 1933.

On the obverse side of 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins, you will find one of two designs. One of these designs is the image of a man kneeling down and chiseling away at a piece of rock. The other, issued largely between 1918 and 1928, is a bust of Simon Bolivar, the man known as the George Washington of South America and the founding father of Colombia. This bust first appeared in 1918 on the 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coin to mark the 100th anniversary of Bolivars victory in the war of independence. Both designs feature an inscription of Republica Colombia across the top with the date mark at the bottom.

The reverse face of 5 Peso Colombian Gold Coins features the same design throughout the history of the coins availability. Here, the Colombian coat of arms is shown with the denomination issued on the top of the design field.
