One of the most famous coin designs of American history was featured on the US nickel from 1913 to 1938. During the Golden Age of American coinage, the Buffalo Nickel featured a Native American figure on one side and an American bison, or buffalo, on the other. Designed by James Earle Fraser, this imagery has been reused consistently on bullion coins and silver rounds. Today, 5 oz SilverTowne Buffalo Silver Rounds are available to you online from JM Bullion.

The Buffalo Nickel design was created by James Earle Fraser, a native of Winona, Minnesota who grew up on the American Plains of the Midwest and Upper Midwest. Many of the works of art and coin designs that Fraser developed were influenced by his time trailing his father who worked as an engineer for the railroad as it moved westward.
All of the 5 oz SilverTowne Buffalo Silver Rounds available to you today are available inside of protective plastic. Unlike the Buffalo Nickel, these SilverTowne Buffalo Silver Rounds contain 5 Troy oz of .999 pure silver and come with no date mark. Alongside creations from Augustus Saint-Gaudens and Adolph A. Weinman, Fraser’s nickel design is considered distinctly American in its vision of the nation.
On the obverse side of the 5 oz SilverTowne Buffalo Silver Round is the image of a Native American figure in right-profile relief. The individual featured here is inspired by the facial features of various real-life individuals of the early 20th century whom Fraser used to help craft a random image. The only engraving on this face is that of “Liberty.”
The reverse face of 5 oz Buffalo Silver Rounds from SilverTowne includes the left-profile vision of a massive buffalo. Inspired by Black Diamond, a resident of the Central Park Zoo in New York in the early 20th century, this buffalo is shown standing on a dirt mound and has an impressive frame. Engravings on this side include “United States of America,” “E Pluribus Unum,” and “5 Troy oz .999 Fine Silver.”
All 5 oz SilverTowne Buffalo Silver Rounds are custom minted at the private Indiana minting facility. Fraser’s Buffalo Nickel design not only appeared on the circulation five-cent piece, but is currently in use on the American Gold Buffalo bullion coin from the US Mint.
