Alphonse Mucha was born in 1860 in what was then the Austrian Empire, but today is known as the Czech Republic. Although he built his career as the father of the Art Nouveau movement in the last decade of the 19th century and first decade of the 20th century, he contributed to the public forum as well with the design of postage stamps, government letterhead, and banknotes for Czechoslovakia following its formation after World War I.
The design of Laurel found in the 5 oz Proof Mucha Collection Laurel Silver Round comes from one of two posters commissioned by the dancer Lygie. Though Ivy is more frequently remembered, Laurel gained greater visibility as calendar image for the signage company Dewez.
Each 5 oz Proof Mucha Collection Laurel Silver Round has a beautiful mirrored finish to the background field on both sides. All Mucha Collection Silver Rounds include edge lettering with the serial number for each individual rounds, with an included Certificate of Authenticity bearing that same serial number.
On the reverse of the 5 oz Proof Laurel Silver Round youll find the left-profile portrait of Laurel. Her eyes are unique in a Mucha design, in that theyre set looking downward. Most of Muchas women figures were looking right at the viewer with a seductive or otherwise sultry gaze.
The obverse of all Mucha Collection Silver Rounds include a front-facing portrait of Mucha. Taken from an actual photograph of the Czech artist, his picture is surrounded by engravings of his name, years of birth and death, and the rounds weight, purity, and metal content.
All silver rounds in this collection are from Anonymous Mint, which has the approval of the Mucha Foundation to reproduce his brilliant works through coin creator Julie Lindquist and Italian Master Sculptor Luigi Badia.
