Alphonse Mucha was born in 1860 in what was then the Austrian Empire, but today is known as the Czech Republic. Although he built his career as the father of the Art Nouveau movement in the last decade of the 19th century and first decade of the 20th century, he contributed to the public forum as well with the design of postage stamps, government letterhead, and banknotes for Czechoslovakia following its formation after World War I.
His design of Laurel came in 1901, at the same time that he created Ivy, whose figure also appears in the Mucha Silver Round Collection from Anonymous Mint. Both prints were created for the dancer Lygie, who is rumored to have served as the inspiration and figure for one or both of these Mucha Women.
On the obverse of the 5 oz Proof Colorized Laurel Silver Round youll find the left-profile portrait of Laurel. Her eyes are unique in a Mucha design, in that theyre set looking downward. Most of Muchas women figures were looking right at the viewer with a seductive or otherwise sultry gaze. Colorization has been added to the image of Laurel to bring her figure to live on the round.
The reverse of all Mucha Collection Silver Rounds include a front-facing portrait of Mucha. Taken from an actual photograph of the Czech artist, his picture is surrounded by engravings of his name, years of birth and death, and the rounds weight, purity, and metal content.
Your 5 oz Proof Colorized Mucha Collection Laurel Silver Round features a mirrored, clear proof finish to the round with colorization added to the design features to bring them to life. Each round ships to you inside of a protective plastic capsule, and features an individually numbered Certificate of Authenticity. These rounds have edge lettering with a serial number that matches that found on the Certificate of Authenticity.
