As mentioned above, the 5 oz silver rounds in this series are available in both proof and antique versions. These proof rounds have strong, frosted elements on the raised design features such as the Cavalryman and the fried eagle. The background field of all proof rounds is deeply-mirrored and clear to create a visual contrast between the designs and the surface of the round.
On the obverse of the 5 oz Proof American Western Skulls Cavalryman Silver Round is the image of a cavalryman’s skull. This skeletal figure has seen his share of battle on the frontier and sacrificed perfect eyesight in the process. Beneath his cavalry cap is a face with just one eye as an eye patch covers the right eye. Below the skull, there are two crossed cavalry swords in keeping with the design theme of the series which uses crossed weapons commonly wielded by the design character.
The US Cavalry first formed as a mounted unit of light dragoons in the Continental Army in 1775. These early mounted units were most effective in the Southern Campaign during the Revolutionary War conducting lightning strikes and disappearing into the bogs, swamps, and backwoods of the Carolinas. The heyday of the US Cavalry came during the Indian Wars, Mexican-American War, and during westward expansion following the Civil War.
The reverse of all 5 oz Proof American WEstenr Skulls Cavalryman Silver Rounds features the fried eagle. This image is similar to the US heraldic eagle, but the bird featured in this design is long gone from this world and has none of its feathers.
