The most popular $1 silver coin in the history of American currency is the Morgan Silver Dollar. Its design features and longevity make it one of the most coveted by collectors and investors, but its lack of availability has prevented many from getting their hands on this brilliant design. Today, you can capture this stunning design on the 5 oz Great American Mint Morgan Silver Bar courtesy of JM Bullion.
Bar Highlights:
George T. Morgan is credited with creating one of the most memorable coin designs in American history, quite the accomplishment for a British citizen. Morgan was an up-and-coming engraver in the United Kingdom, but his home nation’s Royal Mint had no openings for him. In 1876, United States Mint Director Henry Richard LInderman contacted C.W. Fremantle of the Royal Mint in hopes of finding an Assistant Engraver.
Fremantle recommended Morgan, at that time 30 years old, for the post. After a six-month trial period, Morgan would cement his legacy in American coining with the creation of his Morgan Silver Dollar coin. The coin was produced for the first time in 1878, running through 1904, and reappearing for a few months in 1921.
On the obverse face of the 5 oz Great American Mint Morgan Silver Bar is the obverse design from the Morgan Silver Round produced at GRAMMCO. The image features the left-profile image of Lady Liberty, surrounded by 13 stars and the phrase “E Pluribus Unum.” The bar’s weight, purity, and metal content are also featured on this side, along with the stamp “Made in the U.S.A.”
Great American Mint is located in Anaheim, California. Found in 2011, it is the largest private mint on the West Coast. The mint produces silver and copper rounds, silver bars, and even investment-grade bullion blanks for use at sovereign mints.
