In 2017 you’ll find five all-new releases in the famed Hobo Nickel Series. Introduced in 2016, the goal of the program was to bring collectible designs to silver precious metals that invoked the imagery of the hobo artwork era of the late 1800s and early 1900s. The third release of the 2017 issue has arrived and it brings to mind the favored mode of transportation for hobos: trains. The 5 oz Antique The Trains Silver Round is available to you today online from JM Bullion.
Round Highlights:
The 2017 Hobo Nickel collection offers a few departures from the original issues in 2016. Namely, you’ll find that there are no longer proof versions of the coins. The beautiful patina and ancient look of the antique polish applied to these silver rounds was far more popular, so only antique rounds are available, with each enjoying higher mintage figures to meet demand.
Another notable difference this year is the work of the artists. Paulo Curcio, Mr. The, was the lone artist working on all five designs released in the 2016 issue of the rounds, but HotCo has teamed up with five different artists to create entirely unique designs for each release in 2017. In this third release, Steve Adams brings his unique talents to bear in the creation of this silver round.
On the reverse of the 5 oz Antique The Trains Silver Round you’ll find the image of two trains at the focal point of the design. The trains appear to be meeting on a set of tracks and have their headlamps focused on a Hobo Nickel design in the middle. Held aloft by a figure on bended knee, this round has a right-profile portrait of a man with a full beard and hat, a clever take on the Buffalo Nickel obverse.
The obverse of The Trains Silver Round includes a man running down the tracks as a locomotive barrels down on him from behind. A second set of train tracks is visible in the background with a separate locomotive steaming along that set.
Heads or Tales Coin Company teamed with the five artists to create the designs of the 2017 Hobo Nickel collection, and Osborne Mint was the production partner for the coining process.
