Ivy and Laurel are two of the six designs planned for release in the Mucha Collection from Anonymous Mint. Both pieces of poster art were created by Alphonse Mucha in the early 20th century, and were designed for the famed dancer Lygie. It is said that Mucha used Lygie as the inspiration for both Ivy and Laurel.
The decorative image of Ivy was first created in 1901, and features ivy foliage that transforms the circular frame of the original artwork by Mucha into an oblong shape. The two pieces were eventually reproduced as decorative plates for sale.
On the obverse of all 5 oz Antique Mucha Collection Ivy Silver Rounds you’ll find the right-profile portrait of Ivy. Much like Mucha’s other works, Ivy takes the form of a beautiful woman with soft features and suggestive appeal or gestures used in the artwork. Beyond his poster artworks, which became widely available to people from all walks of life, Mucha created a postage stamp, banknote, and other designs for the fledgling government of Czechoslovakia following World War I.
The reverse of the 5 oz Antique Ivy Silver Round includes a portrait of the artist himself. Mucha was born in what was then the Austrian Empire in 1860. Today he is viewed as a cultural icon for the Czech Republic, as the modern day nation encompasses the region in which he was born in 1860.
