Each of the coins in this collection has a gold content of approximately .2418 troy oz. and has been certified by the NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Corporation) or the PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) with an MS62 (Mint State 62) grade. Coins with this particular grade are distinguished by a worn but acceptable condition with only mild scuffing due to hairline and contact marks. As a protective measure, each coin has been kept in its NGC or PCGS certified slab to prevent any further deterioration.
The front side of the coin utilizes Christian Gobrecht’s “Coronet” design which was greatly influenced by Greco-Roman art. In this image, Lady Liberty is classically depicted with a crown bearing her name on it. Framing her is a border of thirteen stars, each representing one of the original colonies. The coin’s mintage year appears beneath her profile. The overall image mimics the portraits seen on ancient Greek and Roman coins.
The reverse side proudly displays our unofficial coat of arms; the Great Seal of the United States. This crest portrays the bald eagle as he spreads his wings behind a shield. In his opposing talons, he balances an olive branch with a set of arrows. Our nation’s name is emblazoned above him. Slight variations in the text beneath him may occur due to design changes that occurred during the coin’s mintage. Depending on its release date, the coin’s value will appear as either “5 D.” or as “Five D.” Similarly, the presence of the “In God We Trust” motto will depend on whether the coin was minted before or after 1866.
