Coin Highlights:
The $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin was designed in 1839 by the US Mint’s chief engraver, Christian Gobrecht. He was also responsible for designing several other popular coins during that time, and today many of those coins are highly prized by collectors. These particular coins have been certified as being in MS61 condition.
The $5 Liberty Half Eagles feature a similar design to other Liberty Coins of the same period. On the obverse, Gobrecht’s depiction of a left facing Lady Liberty is shown at the center. Directly beneath her, the mint year is stamped with a total of 13 stars encircling her.
The reverse side of the coin features an eagle at the center. In the image, the bird is protected by a shield and holds olive branches and a bundle of arrows. A ribbon above its head contains the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” Surrounding the eagle are the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D” to represent the legal tender value and the country of origin.
