5 Gold Products Every Investor Should Own

Fiat currency is unpredictable, no matter what the economy is doing. So, it’s no surprise that you’re finding yourself turning to gold as a way to store the value of your wealth tangibly and safely.

However, in the digital age, there’s a lot of noise. It’s hard to know what vehicles are the best choice for your growing collection of gold. You need an instrument that’s reliable, valuable, and easy to stack.

We can’t tell you how to buy gold. But, we can tell you what our choices would be if we were the ones looking for coins, bars, or other forms of gold for investing. So, here are our choices for the top five instruments that we think work best for an investor.

    American Gold Eagle

Let’s begin with the most obvious choice – the American Gold Eagle (AGE). The AGE is one of the most recognizable gold coins in the world. It is one of the official bullion coins issued by the US government, and is guaranteed to contain their stated amounts of gold in troy ounces.

Each year, the US Mint produces thousands of these coins. They are minted as an alloy with 91.67% gold, 5.33% copper, and 3% silver. As such, they are classified as 22-karat gold, which is also known as “crown gold” due to British coins being made with the same level of purity.

AGEs come in one of four denominations. Each denomination is a function of the amount of gold the coin contains. So, you can buy Gold Eagles in 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, and 1.0 troy-ounce denominations. There are few gold coins that we hold in higher esteem than the Gold Eagles. If you’re ready to start collecting this valuable piece of Americana, check out our Gold Eagle page. We have everything you need to get going.

    Canadian Gold Maple Leaf

If the Gold Eagle is the coin to buy for its sterling reputation, the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf is the coin to buy if you want to maximize the purity of your collection. This coin, stamped by the Royal Canadian Mint, is the purest gold coin commonly available for purchase at this time. It is minted at a jaw-dropping 99.99% fineness.

Like the Gold Eagle, the Gold Maple is produced in significant quantities and multiple denominations each year by the RCM. Due to the demand for them, they are also equipped with state-of-the-art anti-counterfeiting measures, including a proprietary technology called Bullion DNA which allows the Mint to confirm any Gold Maple’s authenticity – or lack thereof.

One element of potential intrigue for the Gold Maple collector concerns the designs on the obverse of the coin. The CGM was first minted in 1979 and depicted Queen Elizabeth II in her 30s. Subsequent strikes in the decades since have included portraits of Her Majesty in her 60s and her late 70s. However, since her death in 2022, the new images will feature King Charles III, so there might be some value in looking for Queen CGMs – sentimentally, if not materially.Regardless of your reasons, the Canadian Gold Maple is a must-have for any serious gold collector. They are issued in a variety of denominations, from 1 gram to 1 ounce (troy). If you want to see which CGMs strike your fancy, head over to this page.

    1 oz Gold Bars

Not everyone wants to stockpile coins, regardless of whether they are from the US or Canada. You may find yourself wanting your gold in a rudimentary form. For you, the choice for building your stack may be 1-ounce gold bars.

1-ounce gold bars are exactly what they seem to be. Each one you purchase is 1 troy ounce of .9999 fine gold. Because they are simpler and have fewer design requirements than other instruments (like Gold Eagles or Gold Maples), you may even be able to acquire them for slightly cheaper than 1-ounce versions of the coins above.

One primary difference between gold bars and official bullion coins is their provenance. Where an official coin is produced by the central government of a country, bars may be produced by both public and private minting organizations. So, you can find gold bar products from government mints if you like, but there are plenty of private options you can use, too.

However, with this instability in the production, it is critical that you ensure that your bars are of the correct size, weight, and purity. Whenever you buy, you should almost always get a new and/or current assay of your piece. As it happens, JM Bullion has plenty of gold bar options with assays ready for you here.

    Pre-33 Gold Coins

As the US has deepened its commitment to fiat currency, the rarity of the metals used for its coinage has decreased. Nowadays, the primary component of all US coins is copper. However, this practice wasn’t always the case, which is why we recommend buying pre-1933 American gold coins.

Before 1933, several coins that were used as legal tender contained gold as part of their minting. Thus, it is a perfectly reasonable investment strategy to acquire these older coins as a means of building your gold stores.

There are a couple of additional advantages to making Pre-33 coins part of your portfolio. For one thing, the value of the coins themselves may increase after you buy them due to changes in the market. You can also credibly claim that you own veritable pieces of American history.

However, with time comes wear, tear, and the potential for mistakes. So, we highly recommend that you buy Pre-33 coins that are certified by third-party grading services like Professional Coin Grading Service or Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. Or, you can just peruse our offerings and pick the ones that are already in that category.

    American Gold Buffalos

Our final recommended instrument for purchasing gold is a relatively recent addition to the collecting landscape. The American Gold Buffalo is a 24-karat minted masterpiece that the US Mint only began producing in 2006. However, its iconic design harkens back to coins from nearly a century prior – the venerable buffalo head nickel.

One reason to put Gold Buffaloes on your list is their scarcity. The US Mint has an established production limit of just 300,000 of these coins each year, so you don’t have to worry about buying a coin that floods the market.

The other thing to realize is that the American Gold Buffalo stands as a sort of answer to the Canadian Gold Maple. If you wanted an American coin, but one with unrivaled purity and clarity, the AGB is for you.

As hard to find as Gold Buffaloes may be, you don’t have to go far to find them from where you are. JM Bullion proudly offers a hearty selection of these coins for anyone who wishes to own a piece of pure history – along with a piece of pure gold.
