Though released in 1964, the Kennedy Half-Dollar did not enjoy much circulation time as it was immediately snapped up by collectors and investors. To commemorate the late President John F. Kennedy, the coin honors JFK with its poignant profile of this remarkable U.S. President. While the 1964 coin was struck with 90% pure silver, subsequent coins beginning in 1965 were struck with 40% silver and their production was increased. Yet even with the increased production, the coins were highly regarded for their silver value and were often collected by people rather than released back into circulation. By 1971, of course, pure silver was completely removed from the minting process.

These coins reflect a poignant figure from the country’s history. Many people may not know that Jacqueline Kennedy, President Kennedy’s widow, was asked by the mint director to choose one of the larger coins to reflect her husband’s image. She did not wish to unseat George Washington from the quarter so she chose the half-dollar which replaced Benjamin Franklin.
