Rather than representing a single individual, Fraser combined the features of three Indigenous individuals from the early 20th century to develop this portrait.
On the reverse of the 2026-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo Coin, the design highlights the American bison. Also created by Fraser, the image shows the animal in left-profile relief. The depiction is based on Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s, and presents the animal with its head lowered as it grazes on a small mound of ground.
