Both the obverse and reverse feature designs by James Earle Fraser that originally appeared on the iconic Indian Head or Buffalo nickel minted from 1913 to 1938, showcasing a Native American profile on one side and an American bison on the other. This design choice connected the modern bullion coin to one of America’s most beloved and artistically significant circulating coins.

James Earle Fraser originally created this design in 1913 for the Buffalo Nickel, and it is commonly recognized as one of the earliest indigenous portraits used on American coinage and currency.

The reverse of 2026 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coins features an American bison. Also designed by Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel, the image depicts a strong bison standing atop a small mound of earth. Fraser based the bison on Black Diamond, a well-known bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in New York during the early 1900s.
