The 2026 release schedule from the United States Mint includes two major milestones for its most popular bullion coin programs. The American Eagle Series will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026, while the American Buffalo Coin Program will mark its 20th anniversary, having first been issued in 2006. Today, 2026 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins in MintSealed cards are available at JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
Designs on the Gold Buffalo are inspired by James Earle Fraser’s 1913 Buffalo Nickel. In particular, his obverse design featured a composite Native American profile on the obverse, drawn from his sketches of several tribal leaders, including Iron Tail, Two Moons, and John Big Tree. Fraser deliberately chose to honor indigenous heritage at a time when Native American culture was being systematically suppressed, creating one of the most artistically significant coins in American history.
All 2026 1 oz American Gold Buffalo Coins in the MintSealed series arrive in a tamper-evident card for added security. These singles are removed from original mint tubes and placed in individual protective holders. Every card includes authentication details such as the coin’s name, date, weight, and gold purity, along with a QR code that can be scanned for additional product information.
The obverse of the 2026 American Gold Buffalo features a right-profile portrait of a Native American figure, designed by James Earle Fraser for the 1913 Buffalo Nickel. Fraser combined the features of three different individuals from the early 20th century to create this representation rather than basing it on a single person.
On the reverse, the 2026 1 oz Gold Buffalo Coin features Fraser’s depiction of an American bison. Modeled after Black Diamond, a bison that lived at the Central Park Zoo in the early 1900s, the animal appears in left-profile relief with its head lowered as if grazing.
