The orchestra emerged in 1842 from the ranks of the Vienna Court Opera orchestra members who sought to perform symphonic repertoire beyond their operatic duties. Founded by conductor Otto Nicolai, the orchestra was established as a self-governing body of musicians who democratically elected their conductors and made collective artistic decisions, a revolutionary concept that distinguished it from the autocratic management typical of 19th-century musical institutions.
The 2026 Austrian Gold Philharmonic coins feature the Great Pipe Organ from the Musikverein on the obverse. Initially crafted by Friedrich Ladegast in 1872, this organ was later enhanced and modernized by several organ builders over time.
On the reverse of the 2026 1/2 oz Gold Philharmonic Coins, a collection of classical instruments represents the Vienna Philharmonic. A cello takes center stage with four violins at its sides, while a bassoon, harp, and Vienna horn complete the arrangement in the background.
