The review process began with more than 30 design proposals, and Jennie Norris’ respectful portrait of a bald eagle was ultimately chosen as the new reverse for the Gold Eagle series.
The obverse of the 2026 American Gold Eagle features Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic image of Lady Liberty. In this design, Liberty appears in a full-length figure with flowing hair as she carries a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. The U.S. Capitol building appears in the background to the left side of the design. This artwork was originally created for the $20 Saint-Gaudens gold coin, which President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned in an effort to introduce the artistic influence of ancient Greek and Roman coinage into American designs.
On the reverse of the 2026 1/2 oz Gold Eagle Coins is Jennie Norris’ bald eagle design. The image shows a close-up profile of the head of an American Bald Eagle, presented with carefully detailed feathers and a focused gaze. This design provides a realistic and modern representation of the national bird on the reverse of the Gold Eagle series.
