First issued in 1986, the Gold Eagle series signaled the return of ongoing gold coinage at the US Mint after a long pause that dated back to 1933. The original reverse displayed Miley Busiek’s family of eagles design, creating visual continuity across the entire Gold Eagle series. This was replaced during the 35th-anniversary celebration in 2021 with a new design.
On the obverse of the 2026 American Gold Eagles, the US Mint presents Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ classic Lady Liberty design, originally created for the $20 Double Eagle. The image shows Liberty in a full-length pose as she strides forward, holding a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Rays of sunlight spread behind her, the U.S. Capitol appears near her feet, and a ring of stars surrounds the outer field to complete this historic motif.
The reverse of the 2026 1/2 oz Gold Eagle Coins displays the updated bald eagle portrait introduced in 2020 and designed by Jennie Norris. This contemporary rendering concentrates on the eagle’s head, offering a close-up view that highlights the bird’s defining features with careful, detailed engraving.
