Introduced in 1986, the Gold Eagle bullion program marked the return of regular gold coin production at the US Mint for the first time since 1933. This full-length portrait of Liberty captures her full-length figure striding forward with a torch in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Sunrays frame her figure from the background, while the U.S. Capitol is depicted at her feet and a ring of stars encircles the field.
In the reverse design of 2026 American Gold Eagles, the design features the refreshed imagery of the bald eagle as created in 2020 by Jennie Norris. This modern image of the bald eagle focuses on the head of the creature, with its physical features captured in impressive detail.
The 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle was introduced alongside the full ounce and fractional denominations in 1986 as part of the American Gold Eagle program authorized by the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985. Containing one-half troy ounce of 22-karat gold and carrying a face value of $25, this mid-sized denomination was designed to offer investors a more accessible entry point into gold bullion ownership than the full ounce coin.
These 2026 1/2 oz American Gold Eagle Coins are available in Mint State 69 condition. Coins with this grade showcase full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detractions. These flaws are limited to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside the primary focal points. Early Release coins are those that are received for certification within 30 days of release from the mint.
