Britannia has traditionally symbolized British strength, maritime power, and national identity through her key attributes: the trident representing naval supremacy, the shield signifying defense and protection, the helmet denoting military readiness, and her seated position by the sea, emphasizing Britain’s island nature and relationship with the ocean that both protected and connected it to the world.
The obverse of the 2026 British Silver Britannias is graced by a depiction of King Charles III. Shown in left-profile relief, the portrait captures His Majesty without a crown. This is the first British coin portrait of King Charles III, introduced in late 2022 and created by Martin Jennings.
On the reverse of the 2026 1/10 Silver Britannia Coins, the design features Britannia, the longstanding symbol of national identity. Philip Nathan’s 1987 artwork presents her in classical form. She is dressed in a flowing robe, dons a Corinthian-style helmet, and holds a trident in her right hand. In her left, she carries an olive branch resting atop a shield adorned with the Union Jack.
