The reverse of the 2026 British Gold Britannia showcases the image of Britannia. First designed in 1987 by Philip Nathan, this version portrays Britannia standing firmly on a stretch of coastal land. She holds a trident in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. A Union Jack shield rests at her side, and a Corinthian-style helmet adorns her head.
The modern era saw Britannia’s design streamlined and simplified for contemporary tastes while maintaining her essential symbolic elements. Art Deco influences appeared in some 20th-century versions, with more geometric lines and stylized features replacing Victorian elaboration. Recent designs have experimented with her pose and expression, sometimes showing her standing rather than seated, with updated artistic interpretations that make her appear more dynamic and forward-looking while preserving the trident, shield, and helmet that remain central to her identity as Britain’s national personification.
