The American Gold Buffalo is the only coin the United States Mint strikes on an annual basis with 24-karat gold. The Gold Buffalo was introduced by the US Mint in 2006, and like other major bullion coins from the US Mint, it replicates historic coin designs once used on circulation currency in the country. Now, 2025-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins are available online from JM Bullion.
Coin Highlights:
For the obverse of 2025-W 1 oz Proof Gold Buffalo Coins, the mint features a depiction of an indigenous tribal figure. Designed in 1913 by James Earle Fraser, this composite image features an indigenous figure in right-profile relief with braided hair and feathers woven into his hair. Fraser designed this effigy with the inspiration of physical features from three real-world indigenous leaders from the early 20th century.
In the reverse design of 2025-W Proof American Gold Buffalos, the mint features another design from Fraser. Also created in 1913, this left-profile relief of the full figure of an American bison captures a depiction of the mighty creature grazing on a small mound of earth. The bison’s figure was inspired by Black Diamond, a resident bison at the Central Park Zoo in New York City in the early 20th century.
James Earle Fraser, the designer of the images found on the modern American Gold Buffalo, created these visuals for the United States Mint in 1913. His images were chosen by the administration of President William Howard Taft for the US Nickel. Known as the Buffalo Nickel, these designs replaced the existing Liberty Head Nickel that had been in use since the 1870s.
These 2025-W 1 oz Proof American Gold Buffalo Coins are available with frosted designs and mirrored fields. Each coin is housed in a capsule and presented in a US Mint box with a themed outer shipper and a Certificate of Authenticity.
