The United States Mint celebrates the 250th anniversary of the United States Army on June 14, 2025, with the release of a unique Proof Silver Eagle featuring a privy mark honoring the US Army. The United States Army was officially established on June 14, 1775, when the Continental Congress authorized the enlistment of soldiers to serve for one year in the Continental Army. The privy mark features the American bald eagle with the US national shield, the arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace, as well as the words UNITED STATES ARMY.
The decision to found the Continental Army, as it was known at the time, came in response to the growing conflict with British forces, particularly after the battles of Lexington and Concord earlier that year. George Washington was appointed as the first Commander-in-Chief, and the Army initially consisted of companies of riflemen from Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia, marking the birth of America’s oldest military service.
The obverse of the 2025-W Proof Army Privy American Silver Eagle features Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design. Created in 1916, the image shows Liberty’s full-length figure in left-profile relief as she walks toward the sun on the horizon with the American flag draped around her figure.
On the reverse of 2025-W 1 oz Proof Army Privy Silver Eagle Coin, the mint features Emily Damstra’s modern depiction of the American bald eagle. This design shows the eagle in flight in left-profile relief as it sweeps downward, clutching an oak branch in its talons.
