The United States Mint introduced the Gold Eagle bullion series in 1986, providing 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold in the BU range and 1 oz gold in the proof range. The first fractional-ounce Proof Gold Eagle was the 1/2 oz gold coin, introduced in 1987, and this was followed by the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz Proof Gold Eagles in 1988. The 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagle is often the lowest-minted coin in the series.
